A Saltier Charge: The First Pocket-Sized Sodium-Ion Battery Is Here – Fortune

French researchers’ first attempt at a rechargeable competitor to lithium-ion batteries could be on the market in 5 to 10 years.

Care for a little salt with your rechargeable battery? Researchers in France have announced their first prototype for a compact sodium-ion battery.

Though scores of sodium-ion batteries have been in the works for decades, this model is the first to put a salty solution into a sleek, rechargeable format—but don’t go throwing your old lithium-ion batteries out the window just yet. Chemist Jean-Marie Tarascon, who helped developed the batt….

Storing Solar Energy: A great idea caught on contested ground | IEEE Spectrum | Road To Abundance

Adding energy storage to sites with rooftop solar power generation offers a range of potential benefits. A battery can help smooth out solar’s inherently variable supply of power to the local grid, and even keep buildings powered during blackouts. Consequently, power-conversion innovators are developing a host of new products designed to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of integrated solar-storage systems. Some analysts project a boom in the co-location of solar and energy storage. GTM Research,…..

What do I make of Powerwall? | Eclipse Now

While Tesla’s Gigafactory is bringing down the *financial* cost of batteries, the *energy* cost of building them is still the same. And that cost is huge. So huge that once counted in the energy accounting of a wind and solar system, it really starts to eat into the EROEI. Sure wind and solar have good energy profits on their own. But read the papers! Where are the energy costs for storage for a system that is only on a third of the time?
