Fantastic sunflowers – Small Allotment Diary

The sunflowers have all come out and are blooming from all angles. One thing that I did not do, was trim the side shoots off. I just let them grow however they wanted.

In the case of the Autumn Beauty flower they are around 6 or 8 feet tall and spread out around 5 feet across the middle.  With the shoots growing sideways, they are producing very many large red and yello….

A whole “Allot-a” veg – One Messy Cook,

So apparently I’m going with whole painfully poor pun vibe.

But forget that, check out these veggies! I’m fairly sure i’m quickly turning into an OAP, with a love of gardening, especially in the allotments. The veg is booming at the moment, and I’m sure I’ll be trying and testing various new recipes using the seemingly endless supply of beetroot, radishes, kale, green beans, parsnips, chard, peas (to name a few!)

Can’t wait to get cracking with some autu….

Chickens, Choughs and chickpeas | Voted With Our Forks

It’s been an interesting week at Chez Fork. The older chooks have finally started laying again after nearly 6 months rest and our little black hen, having laid eggs for a month has now decided to go broody and get some ‘me’ time in the nesting box.

Earlier in week the chickens got quite a shock when a family of six White-winged Choughs decided to drop in for a breakfast visit. I know from a health perspective that having wild birds in the chook pen isn’t ideal, but when we let the girls into their larger run there isn’t much we can do to keep other birds out.
