Panchayats that shift to the system by August eligible for award
Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan has said that the government will execute various projects to promote organic cultivation in the State.
He was speaking after inaugurating the National Agrifest-2014, a seven-day agriculture festival organised by the State Agriculture Department, at the Valliyurkavu temple grounds at Mananthavady in the district on Saturday.
Mr. Mohanan said many a time vegetables bought from neighbouring States were inedible owing to the high toxic residue on them. They posed grave health risks.
The situation could be tackled only by being self-sufficient in the production of organic vegetables, Mr. Mohanan said.
“The government is adopting measures to promote organic cultivation in the State,” Mr. Mohanan said.
A sum of Rs.3 lakh would be awarded to a grama panchayat in each Assembly constituency that would shift to total organic cultivation by the middle of August this year.
