Every summer, the rugged northern Tasmanian coastline is covered with white, as fields of pyrethrum, a perennial white daisy, come into bloom.
Botanical Resources Australia (BRA) is the world’s largest supplier of the natural insecticide made from the dried flower heads.
With a cracker season and new high yielding varieties, this year looks set to be the biggest pyrethrum harvest on record.
Field production and research manager, Tim Groom, says it’s a unique crop to grow.
“It’s one of the few natural insecticides that exist in nature and it’s certainly the biggest one in usage to control a variety of insects, including spiders,” he said.
