63 acres used under Haritholsavam project in Kozhikode

KOZHIKODE: The district administration has brought a total of sixty three acres of land under cultivation under the Haritholsavam@Kozhikode project. The farming on the lands were initiated with the aim of attaining self-sufficiency in agriculture.

The district administration, with the support of agriculture department, had launched the project five months ago and has been receiving overwhelming response from people of all walks of life for the innovative initiative.

Under the scheme, the farmers and members of the residents’ associations have been approaching the administration individually and in group to take up the farming in large and small scale.

The cultivation of vegetables comprising of spinach, elephant yam, tapioca, okra, green chilli, brinjal, bitter gourd, snake gourd, tomato, drum stick, long runner beans, sweet potato and curry leaves had been taken up on these lands.

Vidhya Balakrishnan, Chevayur ward councillor said that the vegetable cultivation on 27 cents of land was initiated under the ward committee. “Through the move, we aim t propagate the message of ‘Go Back To Green’ and popularize organic farming to encourage people to take up farming at their houses. The ward committee aims to set up a model so that others can follow it,” she said.
