Plotting for a winter’s harvest on the farm

In late December, the soil is frozen and kale and Brussels sprout leaves are hanging over from the weight of frost. But that doesn’t stop John Sandri of Farmer John’s Plot in Dublin from continuing to offer fresh, organic produce to the region, by tinkering with how he farms.

Sandri, along with Jasen Woodworth and Garret Sundstrom, directs and manages the nonprofit, working farm with tracts in Dublin and Peterborough. Sandri, standing outside Wednesday morning — with temperatures in Dublin at about 20 degrees — said that farming in the winter presents its challenges, like frost and curtailed daylight. But, he showed that with a dash of ingenuity, you can even find success farming in the winter.

Sandri provided a tour of Farmer John’s two greenhouses in Dublin that are behind the farm stand on Chesham Road off Route 101.

Outside next to the greenhouses are several rows of Brussels sprouts and kale. Even though their leaves are frozen, they can still be harvested, Sandri said.
