Fijians living in the district of Dreketi in Vanua Levu will soon earn income through a beekeeping program introduced by Government. More than 160 beehive boxes will be distributed amongst eight villages in the district. Early next year, villagers will undergo training on using the beehives to extract honey for commercial purposes. The Beehive project is one of the Integrated Human Resource Development Program projects in collaboration with the Northern Development Program (NDP) and the Department of Agriculture in the Northern Division. Eight villages in Dreketi accepted to be part of the IHRDP’s project after they received training and workshops earlier this year. IHRDP manager Aslam Khan said apart from the beehive boxes, tools and other basic equipment were provided.
