Keeping bees safe

I write in response to Allan S. Taylor’s Dec. 9 letter. I agree with him that we need to support our honey bees, but not in the way he suggests. Canadian farmers have come to value neonicotinoid insecticides precisely because of their efficacy, safety to applicators and favourable environmental profile.

To suggest Saskatchewan should react in a similar manner as Ontario proposes ignores at least three critical facts: sound science demonstrates neonicotinoid seed treatments are not responsible for honey bee colony health issues; while honey bees face health challenges the recent StatsCanada report on Production and Value of Honey states the number of beekeepers and colonies in Canada continues to increase; and prairie production agriculture is vastly different, primarily due to canola.
