Prisoners go organic inside Central Jail

LUDHIANA: A small level green revolution is taking shape in the Central Jail in Ludhiana as inmates, convicted for serious crimes like murder, are growing vegetables using the concept of organic farming. To start with, around 30 inmates are growing onion, garlic, cauliflower, carrot, chillies etc on around 10 acres of land inside the jail.

Giving details, Surinderpal Khanna, superintendent, Central Jail, said that around 30-35 inmates – including murder convicts and also those convicted for drug peddling and other crimes, are working for six to seven hours to grow vegetables inside the jail. He added that no chemical is being used on the vegetables grown in the land.
