Came across another German gardening term that’s a lot easier in plain English: Hugelkultur. Found lots of online sites that talk it up, all using that same unpronounceable term, but all defining it by its rough translation: hill or mound culture.
Why they don’t just go with the common English I don’t know, except that maybe it makes it seem cooler, more transcendental or something.
Anyway, it has been used for centuries in Europe; I photographed a hugelkultur garden last summer in Switzerland. Turns out it is used here as well, only we call it a leaf pile with sticks. Or a backyard “burn pile” that nobody has gotten around to burning for years, and starting to grow stuff.
