The UpBeat: The Karen Farm project, a wonderful hybrid of the new and old

Another growing season is over. There is a great sense of achievement among a group of outstanding people who are making a big difference in our community through the Karen Farm project.

The Karen farm, K’Nyaw Sie, is just under an acre of land west of Blackburn Hamlet. Members of the Karen community in Ottawa, with the help of volunteers, experts and various organizations, have turned that land into a productive farm. There are several interesting plants among the rows of herbs and vegetables. Among some of the unusual plants they grow, there are Chin Baung (roselle) and Mying Khwar (pennywort), which are essential flavours in their cuisine. Maybe one day these tangy flavours will catch on among trendy Ottawa chefs, as coriander did many years ago.
