I’ve been composting for a few years now.  I’ll admit that as much as I enjoy planting, tending and harvesting the food – I don’t spend as much time as I really should on the composting part.  We do put our scraps into the barrel, but I rarely water or turn it. The problem is that if not appropriately broken down, the weeds and seeds aren’t killed.
