A Closer Look at EM-1 Microbial Inoculant – go microbes

You’ve probably heard of lactobacilli – a group of lactic acid bacteria that are the stars of probiotics and cultured foods we love, like yogurt.  I was really surprised to see that Lactobacillus casei and other lactobacilli are sold in a “soil conditioner” or “Microbial Inoculant” for plants!  I am not sure exactly how these lactic acid bacteria benefit plant and soil health, but maybe they affect the microenvironment around the roots.

EM-1 stands for “Effective Microorganisms” and this blend was created by Dr. Teruo Higa and sold for inoculating soil and compost.  I did a streak plate of the liquid to culture the microor….
