I hilled up our potatoes for the first time as the plants were getting mighty tall. Each of the four varieties from Seed Savers Exchange looks so healthy that Simon and I remark to each other daily about the potato patch.

To acquire dirt for hilling, I had to break apart the clay between the rows of plants. That’s not all I broke; the hand cultivator I was using snapped apart at the weld. In future years when our soil has loosened up, hilling up the potatoes will be much easier. In the meantime, I tossed a little extra compost between our current plants….
