In 1709 the “Oranje Zigt” farm was established and grew to become one of the biggest farms in the Upper Table Valley during the 19th century. The settlement served as a source of fruits and vegetables that fed the growing colony and ships that passed through the harbor. In 1901 urban expansion required the conversion of the farm into houses and in 1957 the original homestead was razed to make space for a bowling green.
