As part of the XPERT field training we will be looking at soils and there relationship with vegetation. This investigation will involve digging soil pits under different vegetation types and describing the soils following the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) guidelines (Jahn et al., 2006). Furthermore, we will be examining the soils for charcoal particles to see if we can establish the age of the vegetation, i.e. last time it burnt! To examine the soil charcoal we will be following the methodology employed successfully by McMichael et al. (2012) in the Amazon basin.
