Four weeks ago I took a 3-hour bread making course in the hopes that I’d be able to dazzle my dinner party guests with something sumptuous to dip into their olive oil/balsamic mix. And once I had prepared this airy and flavoursome bread at home – whole olives and rosemary sprigs pressed into foccacia are the perfect finishing touch! – I felt a quiet satisfaction as my friends tore off oily slice, after oily slice and nodded appreciatively.
In recent weeks and months I have made a gradual foray into the world of cooking and have been surprised that as well as upping my culinary prowess, this exercise has also provided a much-needed boost to my confidence. It seems that for me at least, small achievements can provide almost as big a breakthrough in the confidence stakes as larger ones.
