Ahmedabad: When Solar Impulse 2, an aircraft powered only by the sun, landed at the international airport in Ahmedabad late night on 10 March, a team of three cyclists riding electric bikes sped to the landing spot.
While one of them balanced the plane from the centre, the other two balanced each of the narrow wings, the design of which has been inspired by the albatross. Together, they ensured that the plane touched down safely. The cyclists have been trained to ride electric bikes that can reach a speed of 60 km per hour when the plane is on the runway. “The toughest part is when the plane is landing at a high speed and we have to balance it while it turns,” said one of the cyclists who is part of the Solar Impulse 2 ground staff. He did not want to be named.
